Open Water Diver

Trainee SAA Open Water Divers must have achieved the level of SAA Elementary Diver and hold a current UK Sport Diver Medical Declaration Form. Any trainee under the age of 18 must have signed written permission from their parents or guardians.

All trainee Open Water Divers MUST attend the SAA Open Water Diver Lectures OWL1 to OWL9:


ASSESSMENTS

OWS2 - Open Water Skills

  • Assemble, test & fit Scuba.
  • Perform buddy checks and bubble checks.
  • Safe entry, buoyancy control and method of descent.
  • Clear mouthpiece and mask. Repeat three times.
  • Demand Valve recovery, Over-Shoulder-reach method & the Lean-and-sweep method.
  • Fin 50m on the surface fully kitted with Scuba and weighbelt and breathing via snorkel.
  • Correct Surface Procedure to exit the water. At surface remove SCUBA and weight belt and hand to an assistant.

OWS2.2 - Buoyancy Skills

OWS2.3 - Out-of-Air diver recovery

  • Change over to an Alternative Air Source.
  • As a Donor, fin 25m.
  • As a Receiver, fin 25m.

OWS2.4 - Dry Suit Skills

  • Demonstrate competent use of Dry Suit.
  • Demonstrate complete Buoyancy control.
  • Demonstrate Ascent control.
  • Demonstrate teh ability to correct and inversion.

Practical Assignment

(This Section should be completed in the pool)
Using Scuba equipment, demonstrate line cutting underwater. Use three types of line:

  • Standard Line used by divers for DSMB's.
  • Mono-filament Fishing Line.
  • 13mm Rope.

OWS2.5 - Examination

The trainee will site the SAA OWX written examination based upon the information contained in the Open Water Diving Lectures OWL1 - OWL9.
The pass mark is 80%.

Open Water Diver Qualifying Dives.

The trainee must complete 4 Qualifying dives in Open Water.
These will determined by the Club D.O.


Once the above criteria has been met, the trainee may then move on to complete Club Diver Training.
